Saturday, April 25, was another turning point for the CACs in Raleigh. For the first time in nearly 10 years, the Raleigh Citizens Advisory Council (RCAC) gathered for a spring retreat, a milestone in our mission to restore and revitalize the partnership between residents and City Hall. We were honored to have Kristine Sloan, Executive Director of Leadership Triangle, join us to present their Civic Leadership Framework. Her workshop provided our members with insights for building trust and mastering the core principles of community leadership, setting exactly the right tone for the work ahead.
The day was productive, covering everything from essential bylaws updates and CAC reactivation strategies to the future of RCAC elections and succession planning. Following a collaborative lunch break, we pivoted to the future of our communications, diving into multimedia guidelines, tech training for our new media kits, and YouTube logistics to ensure our meetings are more accessible than ever. We also tackled the practical side of community advocacy, with focused sessions on meeting management and effective networking within our neighborhoods.
For over 45 years, the RCAC and individual CACs have served as a vital link between Raleigh residents and local government. Established in 1974, these bodies empower residents to shape the future of their communities on issues ranging from rezoning and development to environmental protection and crime prevention. Because CAC participation is entirely voluntary and leaders are not appointed by the City Council, the voice of the community remains independent and authentic.
Despite the official separation from the City in 2020, our members remained committed to reestablishing a formal relationship, a goal achieved when the City Council voted to restore the partnership in February 2024. As we move forward, remember that every resident of Raleigh is automatically a member of a CAC. Please reach out if you’d like to get involved in your area. Thank you to everyone who spent their Saturday with us as we continue to sustain Raleigh’s legacy of citizen-led advisory councils!
