In 2009, Maggie Bailey launched an Environmental Service Program in Raleigh, NC that came to be known as We Plant it Forward. With the support of many volunteers, community partners and funders Maggie developed the We Plant it Forward programs – tree planting, tree giveaways, Arbor Day Celebration and native tree seed collection. Maggie has dedicated the last 17 years to the preservation and restoration of trees and continues her charge to plant, care and advocate for trees. Learn more here: We Plant it Forward
Maggie (The Lorax) spoke to City Council May 12, 2026:
Good day. Mayor Cowell and City Council.
I am the Lorax; please heed my wood-counsel!
“I speak for the trees, for the trees have no tongue.”
And I bring you the voices of thousands among.
A forest of signatures will come your way,
To heal the scarred earth and bring a greener day.
This “is not about what is, it’s about what can become.”
A vibrant tree canopy to grow 24,000 strong.
City of Oaks, “Grow them with care.
Give them clean water. And feed them fresh air.”
This is the future we ask you to share.
“Unless, unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot,
Nothing is going to get better. It’s not.”
But today is the day you can set things right,
For trees, for the creatures and all Raleighites!
