To date, Councilors Melton, Branch and Forte have offered no public apology or explanation for their secret decision to give themselves an extra year in office without any public notice, public comment, or public vote.
Their actions have drawn strong criticism from pro-democracy experts and even North Carolina’s Governor, but so far they have stonewalled, demonstrating a failure of character to recognize their ethical duty to the voters of Raleigh.
Democracy NC co-founder Bob Hall said council’s efforts to suppress citizens’ voices was ‘deplorable’ and ‘a con job’.
The N&O Editors said ‘the last thing we need is for city council members to emerge from a figurative smoke filled room with a decision bearing no public input’
North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, criticized Raleigh’s Council: ‘decisions about local elections like these should involve more open discussion and public input’
Now it’s the time for our voices to be heard at the ballot box. Elect candidates who demonstrate the strength of character and ethics to face the voters with tough decisions, rather than those – like Melton, Branch and Forte – who are willing to hide important decisions from the voters and then stonewall calls for transparency and accountability.
