Dear friends of Raleigh trees,
The City of Raleigh has continued to move forward with its “Leaf Out” plan to steward and grow Raleigh’s urban forest. Parks staff presented an update on the plan to City Council on March 17, and the City Council responded enthusiastically and voted unanimously to endorse the proposal to plant 24,000 native trees in Raleigh by 2032 in celebration of the city’s 240th anniversary. Now the question is how much money the City will include in next year’s budget to launch the campaign.
Here are some links to provide more information and to help you get involved:
-
- Audubon NC has created a petition to let the City Council know that people really support the campaign to plant 24,000 trees. If you’d like to sign on, here’s a link: https://bit.ly/raleigh-trees.
- Ned Barnett, Opinion Editor for the News & Observer, wrote a beautiful editorial in support of the 24K tree campaign.
- Raleigh tree advocates created a “Trees Make Raleigh Cooler” website that will keep you up to date on the 24K tree campaign.
- As part of the Leaf Out plan, the Raleigh Planning Department has released a native plant guide for developers. The list provides information about native trees and shrubs that will do well in various conditions while supporting our local habitats.
Thanks for your work for Raleigh’s environment,
Kate Dixon, Chair, City of Raleigh’s Sustainability, Wildlife, and Urban Trees Committee
