Speakers

Well known Oakwood preservationist, Matthew Brown, hosted a capacity crowd at his historic Lamar Hall home. Brown applauded Livable Raleigh’s advocacy for citizen engagement and our work with the city to help restore Citizen Advisory Councils (CACs).

He noted the purpose of city government is to maximize the quality of life of its citizens, not to maximize profits for any particular industry.

He went on to introduce Charles Meeker as our greatest mayor saying he embodies all the values Livable Raleigh holds dear.

Former Raleigh Mayor, Charles Meeker, said his ambition as Mayor was to make Raleigh grow better, not just bigger and to save trees and advocate for development that strengthens the fabric of our city. He noted this was true 24 years ago and should still apply today.

He said Livable Raleigh believes in good governance and good governance begins with transparency and an informed populace.

Meeker explained you always learn something when you listen to the public and that helps result in better decisions. He concluded by saying Livable Raleigh has strengthened our city and he looks forward to Livable Raleigh being a force going forward.

Yolanda Taylor, noted attorney and Chair of the Wake County Housing Authority, discussed challenges in government support for affordable housing.

She called on attendees to organize for another bond that includes deep affordability, to advocate for a real trust fund that has recurring funding, to sound the alarm when Naturally Occurring Affordable Housing is at risk, to elevate the Raleigh Area Land trust and to make price point a zoning tool.

She concluded by saying Livable Raleigh is a trusted coalition of dedicated residents.
