Believe it or not, Raleigh has some Naturally Occurring Affordable Housing and we believe these properties should be supported and protected.

The Wake County Housing Justice Coalition (WCHJC) hosted an informative webinar on NOAHs on March 31st. They provided five examples of such properties within the City of Raleigh:

  • 2813 Seclusion Court
  • 319 N Carver St (College Park neighborhood)
  • 702 Bragg St
  • South Bloodworth Ave
  • Heritage Park

Presenters walk the audience through each property, highlighting current threats to these precious resources. At the end of the program, we’re asked to join the Wake Housing Justice Coalition in calling on Raleigh City Council to do the following:

  • Place a moratorium on city-initiated teardowns
  • Provide new funding now for low-income housing repair & rehab
  • Create an affordable housing oversight task force
  • Bring the community in and center community voices

We invite you to watch and share this video and get engaged on this issue. If we are sincere in our commitment to truly affordable housing, we must speak up and help educate the community on NOAHs.

More importantly, reminder that you have until 5 PM, Friday, April 2nd to sign up and speak at Raleigh City Council’s meeting next Tuesday 7 PM, on behalf of the WCHJC and also the communities at large to protect existing affordable housing. Sign up for either or both of the following:

  • General Public Commenting at tinyurl.com/GeneralCommenting to let the city know that you have attended WCHJC’s zoom session on saving NOAHs, and that this is WCHJC’s position on affordable housing needs for low income:
  • Place a moratorium on city-initiated teardowns
  • Provide new funding now for low-income housing repair & rehab
  • Create an affordable housing oversight task force
  • Bring the community in and center community voices

WCHJC hopes they can count on your support and advocacy! Email them if you have any questions at wchousingjusticecoalition@gmail.com
