Cynthia Johnson is a Virginia native, but chose Raleigh as her home 50 years ago. She has lived in West Raleigh, south of NC State near Avent Ferry Road, in Five Points, and currently in North Raleigh. She has worked in RTP and for WCPSS. She remembers the Plantation Inn being lost, but also watched the Entertainment and Sports Arena become a reality. She understands why so many want to come here. We need to plan a future for Raleigh that retains its culture and beauty while embracing all its citizens.

Cynthia submitted the following to Livable Raleigh after we published our agenda for Affordable Housing:

Good Morning,

Just wanted to let you know that the new website looks great and that I totally agree with your Agenda for Affordable Housing, especially having developers required to help solve this.

My concern is the tax burden placed on long-term residents on fixed incomes.

I came to Raleigh in 1976 as a graduate student at NC State and have since been both a teacher assistant and a teacher in Wake County Public Schools. My four children were raised here and are products of that school system.

I worked hard to pay off the mortgage on my home as a single parent and now as a retiree I face being forced to move out of Raleigh due to the continuing rise in combined Raleigh and Wake County property taxes.

This is an issue that City Council needs to address also.

Shout-out to Larry Helfant for connecting me with Livable Raleigh when I attended several Midtown CACs. Livable Raleigh and Larry do a great job of keeping citizens informed – another City Council failure.

Warm regards,

Cynthia Johnson
