HIGHLIGHTS

  • Council’s total Affordable Housing production, from all funding sources including the $80M Bond, is less than 600 units per year. Despite losing more than 4,100 affordable units each year, Council policies and rezoning votes overwhelmingly produce high-profit, market rate and luxury units.
  • Afternoon meeting opened with moment of silence for victims of mass shooting.
  • Public comments focused on council’s community engagement failures, misleading statistics, problems with infill development, and gun violence.
  • Approved $5M for 119-unit Affordable Housing
  • Councilor Cox asked for resumption of regular meetings between RPD and community at community centers as used to happen with monthly CAC meetings. There was no response.

  • Council’s total Affordable Housing production, from all funding sources including the $80M Bond, is less than 600 units per year. Despite losing more than 4,100 affordable units each year, Council policies and rezoning votes overwhelmingly produce high-profit, market rate and luxury units.
  • Institutional ownership of single-family rentals is hurting housing affordability
  • Raleigh has lost a lot of naturally occurring affordable housing (Declined from 75% of rental housing in 2010 to 30% in 2020)
  • Head of Planning says Missing Middle will be the answer to Affordable Housing (in 30-50 years)
  • Councilor Melton asks them to streamline market rate housing as well as Affordable Housing because he apparently believes in the debunked trickle down theory.
