Highlights

  • Councilor Cox asked that $332,033 in funding for Dix Park Cultural Interpretative Plan be held six months due to other pressing needs – motion failed due to lack of a second
  • Several public comments about lack of engagement by this council, lack of affordable housing, gentrification, and asking for support of a treaty banning nuclear weapons
  • Remote public comments during in-person council meetings will now be allowed via voicemail. The City Attorney continues to maintain the lie that people cannot call in and make comments remotely during the meeting. The voicemail could legally be played during the meeting, but no decision was made to allow that. Motion passed to add remote public comments during in-person meetings to the legislative agenda.
  • Wakefield Small Area Plan referred to Planning Commission.
  • Additional Gap Financing for Milner Commons – unanimously approved
  • BPAC Annual Work Plan approved
  • Rezoning Z-4-22: West South Street – issues raised by neighbors about parking, retail, and lack of affordable housing in return for increasing developer profit with added height – Councilor Cox spoke in support of the neighbors – Approved 7 to 1 with Councilor Cox opposed. Councilor Forte moves to send Boylan Heights parking issues to Transportation and Transit Committee
  • Rezoning Z-67-21: North Hills Assemblage, located at the intersections of I-440 at Lassiter Mill Road, and Lassiter Mill Road at Six Forks Road (District A) – Mayor suggests leaving hearing open and moving item to Transportation and Transit Committee for discussion. Councilor Buffkin says transportation and transit is not an issue. Issues are Affordable Housing and Height and suggests moving to Safe, Vibrant, and Healthy Communities Committee. Moved to Transit and Transportation Committee by vote of 5 to 3.
  • Text Change TC-21-21: Cameron Park NCOD – rescheduled to 9/6 because of insufficient notice requirement
  • Economic Development and Innovation Committee will meet 8/30 at 1:30pm
  • Transportation & Transit Committee will meet 8/25 at 3pm to discuss North Hills issues (Z-67-21)
  • No August meetings for Growth & Natural Resources or Safe, Vibrant, & Healthy Communities
  • Councilor Knight brought up Missing Middle text changes and essentially asked for a public relations campaign to sell it to the public. I guess because the public doesn’t understand how 17 townhouses being proposed at $2M each constitute affordable housing.
