AGENDA B.1 Special Committee on Council Advisory Boards and Commissions - Public Comment Session Evan Raleigh, City Manager’s Office Tiesha Mosley, Department of Community Engagement During the August 19th meeting, City Council charged the Special Committee on Boards and Commissions with hosting a public input session. Prior to the public comments, staff will provide a brief presentation on committee actions to date and outstanding action items. City Council adopted a series of amendments related to the structure and function of various City advisory boards and commissions on July 1. The approved changes include: The adoption of a standard bylaw template to be used by all boards and commissions; The approval of a document offering guidance to members of Council serving as liaisons to a board or commission; The merger of the Historic Resources and Museum Advisory Board with the Historic Cemeteries Advisory Board; Changing the name of the Fair Housing Hearing Board to the Fair Housing Advisory Board; and Amending the name of the Mayor’s Council for Persons with Disabilities and aligning the Council’s appointment, term, and removal process with other advisory boards and commissions as outlines in the City […]

    Friends and neighbors,SW Community Meeting at the Carolina Pines Community Center (2305 Lake Wheeler Rd.). We will meet in person, without streaming, next Monday evening, September 8th, at 7:00 pm. There will be reports from Raleigh Police Officers and City Inspections. We plan to have a special update from Lisa Genschel with the Dix Park Conservancy about a program to join in supporting Dorothea Dix Park Conservancy. Jeff Murison of The Hillsborough Street Community Service Corporation (Live it Up) will update us on programs for their included three mile long area and programs that focus on community success. We need your help!  -  I have been told that we can use the Center's freezer. Therefore, I will, as previously promised, donate ice cream. Please come and help with the ice cream. Since I have no idea as to how many will attend I don't need to be left with melting cartons and no freezer space. Please bring help. Kids welcome. This meeting is intended to be focused on sharing interests, and concerns and just acquainting ourselves with our neighbors. Please join this gathering if you can. The proposed South Park Heritage Trail is an approximately two-mile-long cultural trail that will tell the story of this important historically Black neighborhood.   • 2025 Big Sweep at Lake Johnson

    2025 Big Sweep at Lake Johnson Sign up and share with the Friends of Lake Johnson!  https://raleighnc.gov/parks-volunteer . Description: The annual Lake Johnson Park NC Big Sweep event invites participants to walk or paddle about the park to pick up trash. Check-In: Volunteers will check-In with Lake Johnson staff at 9 a.m. - 9:45 a.m. at the Thomas G. Crowder Woodland Center. Cleanup: Once checked in, volunteers can head to the lakefront and begin cleaning. Post-Cleanup: As a thank you for volunteering, the Friends of Lake Johnson Association will be providing food and beverages until 1 p.m. We will also be taking a group photo to show off your hard work! Duties and Impact: Volunteers will use pickup sticks, gloves, and trash bags to collect and dispose of litter within the lake and along the shore. Improperly discarded litter is a serious environmental hazard. It pollutes the water we use and depend on, it has the potential to cause injury to wildlife, and it is simply an eyesore. By removing litter, we can help provide a healthier environment for wildlife and citizens to enjoy.   Work Environment: We will be working outside in the elements.     Five Points Friends and Neighbors:  Our regular second Monday of every other month meeting time would have our next Five Points CAC meeting fall on next Monday, Sep 8th.     But due to some scheduling issues, we are going to meet via Zoom on September 15th, 7-8pm.   Please join us for the next Five Points CAC Zoom meeting on September 15th 7-8pm.
