New Applicant Workshop for 2024-25 Arts Commission Grants

Interested in learning more about the City of Raleigh Arts Commission Grants and whether your nonprofit organization is eligible to apply for this funding? Two one-hour New Applicant Workshops will be offered this November and are open to anyone interested in learning more about Arts Grant funding. This in-person session is on November 11, but a virtual session will be held November 8. The New Applicant Workshop introduces prospective applicants to the grant program and provides in-depth information about eligibility requirements, the application process, and what happens once a grant has been awarded. Raleigh nonprofits who currently do not receive Arts Grant funding but plan to apply for 2024-2025 funding are required to attend one of the two available sessions. Their purpose is to support business activity and community in an area. The Blue Ridge Corridor Alliance will be making a presentation for our meeting regarding their request of Raleigh City Council to consider creating a Municipal Service District for the West Raleigh Community. A similar conversation has been made that will pertain to the South Saunders/ Lake Wheeler Road area. Colleton Road Sidewalk Public Meeting

A New Sidewalk is Coming to Colleton Road The City plans to install a sidewalk on Colleton Road along the east side of the street from Bertie Drive to Oakwood Avenue. We are having an onsite public meeting on November 15, from 4:30 - 6:00 p.m., so residents can see the design plans and ask questions about the project. The team will be on the corner of Colleton Road and Bertie Drive between 4:30 and 6 to talk with residents about the proposed sidewalk. Learn more about the project.

Turning the Tide: HB 28 and the Fight Against Plastic Pollution

League of Women Voters-Wake’s Environment Committee, in collaboration with Toward Zero Waste, will host the November Timely Topics event, a discussion of the problem of plastic pollution in North Carolina and recent efforts to combat this problem. One of those efforts is HB-28, the NC Managing Environmental Waste Act of 2023. Championed by Rep. Harry Warren (R, Rowan), the bill’s primary sponsor, and Rep. Pricey Harrison (D-Guilford), HB 28 is a bipartisan bill that allocates funds to the NC Policy Collaboratory to study the issue of food service ware and that aims to reduce the use of single-use plastic throughout the state. Leading the discussion will be Grady O’Brien, Policy Associate with the North Carolina Conservation Network. Grady will summarize the current status of the bill and will outline the challenges faced by legislators and environmentalists who are working to eliminate plastic waste. The Environment Committee will be offering light refreshments for attendees.  In a spirit of sustainability, all serve ware will be either reusable or compostable.
