Reflecting Raleigh: Ask-A-Planner

Attend an upcoming Ask-A-Planner to ask questions about Reflecting Raleigh: The Next Comprehensive Plan. City staff are interested in engaging with residents, sharing information, and learning about their vision for the future of Raleigh. Over the next year, the City will be hosting a series of Community Conversations on the following topics: Affordable Housing Stormwater Trees Sustainable Infrastructure & Services Neighborhoods Transportation & Mobility Sustainability and equity will be at the heart of every conversation. We want to hear from you at any of the Ask-A-Planner events.

Biophilic Cities Explained

Tim Beatley is coming to Raleigh!  Date is Sept. 25th at All Faith’s Chapel on Dix Park.  The talk begins at 5:30.  Please help spread the word with colleagues as well as with members of Raleigh’s boards and commissions.  Does the name ring a bell but you don’t remember the connection?  Tim Beatley is the founder of the Network of Biophilic Cities.  Raleigh is a member of the Network but apparently this status is not well understood or appreciated.  Help spread the word. https://dorotheadixpark.org/event/being-biophilic-city-raleighs-present-future-sustainable-design Understanding the significance of Raleigh’s status as a member of the Network of Biophilic Cities is vital when considering how our city is being built as it grows.  Would you like to see more green wall planters on our tall parking decks?  Would you like to see roof top gardens providing habitat for birds and a green outdoor space for people living in tall buildings?  Would you like to see more tree lined streets and plants that attract butterflies, bees and birds as well as more stormwater retention gardens?  There are many innovative environmentally wise projects Raleigh could be implementing IF we citizens knew of them.  Let’s learn what other cities are doing!

The concerns regarded how existing conditions allowed aggressive drivers to pass slower motorists in the existing elongated dedicated right-turn lane into Conn Elementary School. Prior to installation of the existing dedicated right-turn lane, unregulated on-street parking was existing in this curb-space along Brookside Drive. As Council may recall, recent public comments during the May 14 and May 21 public comment periods were presented regarding concerns and planned improvements along Brookside Drive between Frank Street and Glascock Street.  Council has also received numerous email messages from residents in the vicinity related to these same concerns. Planning Commission Infrastructure and Mobility Committee – CANCELLED

The Infrastructure and Mobility Committee is a subcommittee of the Planning Commission. This subcommittee can discuss issues related to transportation, transit, and infrastructure policies and improvements and connections related to land use or large transportation planning efforts. The committee typically meets on the fourth Thursday of the month at 3 p.m. The meetings are held at the Raleigh Municipal Building (RMB), located at 222 West Hargett Street in room 303.

Planning Commission Committee of the Whole – CANCELLED

The Committee of the Whole is an informal special meeting of the full Planning Commission to have further discussions on specific referral items. The Planning Commission bylaws state that rezoning requests that are deemed inconsistent with the Comprehensive Plan and future land use map are automatically referred to the Committee of the Whole. Additionally, requests for Planned Development or Campus District are also automatically referred to this Committee. The committee typically meets on the fourth Thursday of the month at 4 p.m. The meetings are held at the Raleigh Municipal Building (RMB), located at 222 West Hargett Street in Room 305.

Pop-Up Stream Cleanup

Help Us Clean a Stream! Join Stormwater staff for a pop-up stream cleanup! Help us clean up a section of Walnut Creek on Saturday September 28th. We'll meet at Apollo Heights Park (check-in at the picnic shelter). Please come ready to get a little wet and muddy; long pants and closed-toe shoes are required. All other materials will be provided. Space is limited to 35 volunteers. All minor children must be accompanied by an adult. Register to volunteer!
