In alignment with the community-led initiatives that created the 2014 Master Plan Design for Walnut Creek Wetland Park, it is the City’s goal to create a garden space designed to provide access to fresh produce and help raise awareness about food deserts, develop food and garden-related programming, and create a model for food production and distribution. This lecture will explore African Americans in medicine in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Dr. Chad Swanson, DO, MPH, and La’Cura Venable, MA, LPN, will discuss the history of St. Agnes Hospital and Dr. Lawson A. Scruggs and how Black medical practitioners broke barriers in the field of medicine despite racism and Jim Crow laws.
