Seminar 2: Fire Safety – Grills, Bonfires and Backyard Fires

Topics of this class include:

• Raleigh open burning law: only heating and cooking fires permitted
• Fire size limits: no more than three feet high or two feet in diameter
• Grill safety: 10-foot clearance from combustible construction required
• Portable fire pits: must be 15 feet from any structure
• Fire pit safety: always have extinguisher or hose nearby, 25-foot clearance
• Brush Fires-Never light fires in windy conditions – one spark can travel far
• Always fully extinguish before leaving – check embers
• NC fireworks law: most exploding and airborne fireworks are illegal
• Legal consumer fireworks: ground-based sparklers and fountains only
• What to do if a fire escapes: call 911, evacuate, do not attempt to fight it
