Fourth Ward Celebration August 15, 2024 You’re invited! Greetings! I am Octavia Rainey, a Raleigh Historian. I would like to invite you to an event series to learn more about the Fourth Ward neighborhood you live in. The history goes back to the Cannon Planation. The Cannon family land was located near the railroad track and sold to freedmen. The Fourth Ward neighborhood was once a thriving African American neighborhood that was destroyed in the mid-1960s by urban renewal. The Fourth Ward is the name of our neighborhood, and we must maintain the name of our neighborhood. The City of Raleigh has a long-standing history of supporting activities that celebrate the rich history and cultural heritage of the city’s neighborhoods both past and present. This weeklong celebration is an excellent opportunity to come out and meet your old neighbors, talk about the past, and learn about the future of the Fourth Ward. Please join me at any or all of the six Fourth Ward Celebration events listed below. I’m looking forward to seeing you there. August 26 – September 1 Events Monday, August 26, 6p.m. – 7p.m.: A Celebration of Mount Hope Cemetery Fourth Ward, Mount Hope Cemetery, 120 Prospect […]

We will meet in person, without streaming, this coming Monday evening, September 9th, at 7:00 pm. There will be reports from Raleigh Police Officers and City Inspections followed by social time. Since I have no idea as to how many will attend I don't need to be left with melting cartons and no freezer space. This meeting is intended to be focused on sharing interests, and concerns and just reacquainting ourselves with our neighbors. Several of our City Councilors have indicated they plan to attend. Please join this gathering if you can. Hopefully, we will have a good turnout. So much of the World has changed over the last few years. Celebrate Crabtree Creek Trail’s Extension “Our greenways are a signature amenity that differentiates Raleigh from other places,” says Beverley Clark, chair of the city’s parks recreation and greenway advisory board and founder of the Friends of Raleigh Greenways (FRoG). Tim Beatley is coming to Raleigh! Date is Sept. 25th at All Faith’s Chapel on Dix Park. The talk begins at 5:30. Please help spread the word with colleagues as well as with members of Raleigh’s boards and commissions. Does the name ring a bell but you don’t remember the connection? Tim Beatley is the founder of the Network of Biophilic Cities. Raleigh is a member of the Network but apparently this status is not well understood or appreciated. Help spread the word. https://dorotheadixpark.org/event/being-biophilic-city-raleighs-present-future-sustainable-design Understanding the significance of Raleigh’s status as a member of the Network of Biophilic Cities is vital when considering how our city is being built as it grows. Would you like to see more green wall planters on our tall parking decks? Would you like to see roof top gardens providing habitat for birds and a green outdoor space for people living in tall buildings? Would you like to see more tree lined streets and plants that attract butterflies, bees and birds as well as more stormwater retention gardens? There are many innovative environmentally wise projects Raleigh could be implementing IF we citizens knew of them. Let’s learn what other cities are doing!

The concerns regarded how existing conditions allowed aggressive drivers to pass slower motorists in the existing elongated dedicated right-turn lane into Conn Elementary School. Prior to installation of the existing dedicated right-turn lane, unregulated on-street parking was existing in this curb-space along Brookside Drive. As Council may recall, recent public comments during the May 14 and May 21 public comment periods were presented regarding concerns and planned improvements along Brookside Drive between Frank Street and Glascock Street.
