BUDGET PRIORITIES

1. What are your top three spending priorities for Raleigh?

  1. Increase pay for RFD / RPD
  2. Maintain parks and greenways
  3. Maintain infrastructure

  1. Increasing the supply of low-income housing
  2. Raising the wages of city workers and improving their working conditions
  3. Increasing access to public transit and making it free at the point of use

  1. Basic services: Water/Sewer, Sanitation, Public Safety, Transportation, Planning & Communication
  2. Housing
  3. Parks

  1. Fire & Police Safety
  2. Water & sewer availability
  3. Affordable Housing

  1. Housing: we have a housing crisis in Raleigh.  I pledge to help build a sound city council that looks at how redevelopment affects each citizen.  I am not against growth and development but the Council must consider every citizen when decisions are made.  Even middle-income citizens are struggling to find housing and to keep a roof over their heads. Too many citizens feel dehumanized and devalued.
  2. Equity in pay: I support a living wage of at least $15 an hour for our citizens.  Raising the minimum wage boosts employee morale as well as helps workers find affordable housing and sustains local businesses.  I’ve done outreach to citizens who are living in hotels, and I see the difficulties families face, especially those with children.  Wages need to keep up with the cost of living.
  3. Increase funds for home improvement.  Seniors are faced with eviction when they are low on funds to keep their homes livable.
2. Name your top three suggestions for cutting the city's spending.

  1. Remove all DEI and new positions created for 22-23
  2. End frivilous spending. Ex the 1 million for the Convention Center LED screen
  3. My plan is to cut 3-5 million from the 22-23 budget

  1. Divesting from the police budget. ***See a full explanation at the end of the survey***
  2. Halting any tax-incentive grants or using city funding for private development that is not low-income/affordable
  3. Investing in cost-effective bus shelters with functional purposes, rather than hostile architecture that fails to meet residents’ needs

  1. We are growing rapidly and are understaffed in many areas
  2. This not the time to reduce investments in personnel, operations or capital
  3. The productivity of middle management should always feel the manager’s firm hand. Hybrid work may reduce the costs of space

  1. Full audit of budget
  2. Doing just basics

  1. Spend less on parks and more on providing housing for citizens that are homeless
  2. Cut back on the incentives provided to developers
3. Do you support spending money to raise compensation for public safety personnel?

4. Will you support more equitable allocation of budget funds across City districts and ensure that projects and services are not concentrated in any one district?

5. Will you do more to minimize tax and fee increases?
