SUMMARY:10th Annual Celebrate Oberlin Event
DESCRIPTION:Be Our Guest!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us for an exciting evening meeting new friends or reuniting with neighbors at FOV’s 10th Annual Celebrate Oberlin event. This year’s celebratory event will be held on April 20\, 2024\, from 4-8 p.m. on the beautiful grounds of Raleigh’s newest park – Latta University Historic Park. \n  \nEnjoy the evening visiting a mobile library of education tables featuring:  Oberlin Pioneers in Medicine hosted by WakeMed\, radar scans of Oberlin Cemetery conducted by former NCSU doctoral student John Wall\, Oberlin Veterans from various military campaigns\, and other education displays. Dance the night away or relax on a blanket on the grassy knolls listening to the live performance of EPIC\, whose playlist will include jazz and gospel. Stroll through the park and read the interpretive signage honoring Latta University. Learn about the landmark structures along Oberlin Road by partaking in a free Historic Trolley Tour of Oberlin offered throughout the evening by FOV volunteers. Satiate your appetite with offerings by two gourmet food trucks:  Oak City Fish & Chips and Sweet’s Turkey BBQ. And\, satisfy your sweet tooth with homemade pound cakes provided by White Memorial Presbyterian Church\, West Raleigh Presbyterian Church\, and other terrific bakers. \n  \nThis is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate Oberlin with the community\, while learning about the history and the leaders of North Carolina’s largest known remaining intact settlement founded by a free Black person in 1858. We hope to see you there. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSincerely\,.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nExecutive Director \nFriends of Oberlin Village

SUMMARY:Mordecai CAC
DESCRIPTION:Join us on May 14 at the Person Street Bar\nPlease join the Person Street Partnership (PSP) and the Mordecai CAC on Tuesday May 14\, 2024 at the Person Street Bar 5:30 to 7pm for a joint celebration of the success of the PSP which started with its first meeting at the Urban Design Center in March of 2011. \nThe partnership was founded by Philip Bernard\, former Mordecai CAC co-chair and current Mordecai Traffic chair as a way to revitalize the North Person Street business district by making changes to Blount and Person Streets in order to calm traffic in the district. The PSP advocated for the funding of the Blount/Person Street and Wake Forest corridor study which subsequently resulted in funding for Phase One of the corridor project\, the “road diet” which was completed in 2021. \nSince its inception\, the PSP has organized quarterly meetings and “visioning presentations” with NC State’s graduate school of Architecture and Design\, business and property owners\, the surrounding neighborhoods including Mordecai and Oakwood\, William Peace University\, Raleigh City Council and Staff\, and anyone who wished to see North Person Street flourish as a neighborhood business district. \nIn 2014\, the PSP was awarded a Sir Walter Raleigh award for community appearance and was also named one of the ten most up and coming downtown neighborhood business districts in the country by USA Today. The PSP has partnered with the Village at Pilot Mill to create the Holiday Light-ball Project and the City of Raleigh and Downtown Raleigh Alliance to create the Person Street Bench project and the “Build a Better Person” mural. So please plan to join us on May 14 to celebrate our many successes. This will be Philip Bernard’s last official gathering as leader of the group as he plans to step down to pursue other interests. Join other PSP partners as we continue exploring new ways to “Build a Better Person” and new directions for the PSP.
