(Always report porch pirates to Raleigh Police Dept) We are trying to “Bridge” our SW Virtual meeting to the Five Points CAC Virtual Meeting where Captain Manson will discuss the recent burgulary and fatality that happened recently at 819 Clay Street in their area.\nCarolina Pines Community Center Projects and Updates – Playgrounds and tennis courts are being modified.\nCarolina Pines Ave Improvement Project – Extending from Lake Wheeler Rd. to South Saunders St. Construction has started with alternating single lane traffic much of the day. This is going to be a complex project. Suggest avoiding the area if you don’t live there.\nRaleigh Golf Association (RGA) – Land Sale and Rezoning – RGA property north of Tryon Rd. is in the process of being sold. A rezoning case that will allow “Affordable 60% AMI” apartments being built there was approved on October 7th. The number of units planned is currently about 370. Planned improvements to Fairway Drive along with a signal light at Tryon Rd will affect us all.\nLake Wheeler Road Construction at Dix Park – The section of Lake Wheeler Road from South Saunders south to the railroad crossing is about to begin significant construction. Traffic in the area will be severely limited. Avoid or plan well in advance.\nCommunity Safety – We all need to discuss any ideas about how we can make our neighborhoods safer. Incidents occur. How we come together matters a lot. Comments and updates from our community leaders and residents.\n\nOur February 9th meeting will be Virtual using Zoom. \nFor March 8th we will be back to our in-person. DESCRIPTION:I have a few updates for you since our last meeting in January.\n\nFirst\, early voting has begun for the upcoming primary. As many of you know\, the only Council seats that will be on the ballot will be the At-Large and District C candidates since there are more than two people running for each seat. With that in mind\, I think it is important to know the candidates so that you can make an informed choice when voting. Our February meeting will focus on the At-Large Candidates with an in-person discussion with all six candidates that are running for that position. Manson will give us a police report for recent crime in the Five Points area.\n \nThen we will be joined by Sgt. Madeline Horner and other members of the Raleigh ACORNS (Addressing Crises through Outreach\, Referrals\, Networking\, and Service) team. ACORNS is a proactive unit that works with residents experiencing crises and connects them with appropriate community resources. The team pairs social workers with law enforcement officers to provide support using the most appropriate and least intrusive interventions possible. \n\n\nThis discussion is the follow-up to Captain Manson’s safety presentation in January. During that meeting\, there was interest in hosting a special follow-up session in February. However\, the weather issues in early February created scheduling challenges for me—and likely for others as well. Planning a special meeting later in February would have placed it very close to our regular March meeting\, which is relatively early in March. As a result\, I decided it would be best to continue the discussion at our March meeting.\n \nAlso at our meeting\, we will be joined by Brian Smith\, Natural Resources Superintendent at City of Raleigh Parks\, Recreation and Cultural Resources\, to talk with us about Raleigh’s Biophilic Efforts and Invasive Species Program. \n \nAnd Council Member Christina Jones plans to join us to share a City Council update.\n \nHope to see you all there!\n \nEdie\nChair\, Five Points CAC

DESCRIPTION:SW Community Meeting at the Carolina Pines Community Center (2305 Lake Wheeler Road). We will meet in person\, without streaming\, this coming Monday evening\, March 9th\, at 7:00 pm. \nThere will be reports from Raleigh Police Officers and City Inspections. \nWe need your help! – I have been told that we can use the Center’s freezer. Therefore\, I will\, as previously promised\, donate ice cream. Please come and help with the ice cream. Since I have no idea as to how many will attend I don’t need to be left with melting cartons and no freezer space. Please bring help. Kids welcome. \nThis meeting is intended to be focused on sharing interests\, and concerns and just acquainting ourselves with our neighbors. Please join this gathering if you can. Hopefully\, we will have a good turnout. I plan to schedule in-person meetings four times a year (March\, June\, September\, and December) the others will continue to use Zoom which continues to bring us together very easily. \nChair set-up in our traditional room at Carolina Pines Center will start at about 6:45 pm. The approval of the rezoning of North Hills was decided too quickly without consideration for city planning guidance or infrastructure sufficiency to support further development. For more detail and to join the many residents that have already signed on to the movement\, please visit the organization’s website:\n\nhttps://www.midtownneighborsunited.org/\n\nWe will also have an update on the Missing Middle case\, currently identified as Sub-0037-2025\, where 16 townhomes will be built by right on two R-4 lots at Anderson Drive and Six Forks. This case was previously denied by Council when presented for rezoning.\n\nIn addition\, there will be an update on the Council-chosen pathway for section 1b of the Big Branch Greenway Connector. This is another case where the Council ignored the area residents and chose a path that floods and impacts the surrounding residents while ignoring their concerns.
