SUMMARY:City Council Work Session on Election Reform
DESCRIPTION:A. 11:30 A.M. WORK SESSION CALLED TO ORDER BY THE MAYOR\n\n1. Municipal Election Opportunities\n\nThe Raleigh City Council will meet for an afternoon session to discuss possible election reforms. \n\nWatch Council Meeting Live Stream\nView agendas and past minutes\nVisit our City Council page to find your council member and other council services.\n\n\nThis is a Work Session\, so the public cannot participate. But\, you can let the councilors know what you think BOTH before their discussion and after their discussion.\n\n\n\nWhat are your thoughts on having a primary in the spring to fix the problem of plurality elections where candidates don’t need 50% of the vote to win?\n\n\nWhat about ADDING more council districts?\n\n\nDo you want Council to change their terms in office from 2 years to 4 years?\n\n\nDo you know it is legal for the councilors to have 4-year terms while the Mayor’s term remains at 2 years? That’s how it is done in Durham\, Chapel Hill and Carrboro right NOW!\n\n\nDo you want City Council to make these kinds of changes without putting it to a vote of the people through a referendum?\n\n\nDo you want Mayor Baldwin to sneak off to the state Legislature and ask them to make the changes she wants for her so she can claim she didn’t do it?\n\n\nDo you remember that is how the previous council moved the election to Nov 2022 and eliminated runoffs without asking YOU what you want?\n\n\n\n\n\nLivable Raleigh held a Community Conversation\, “What’s Next for Democracy in Raleigh”\, on these issues on March 4th. You can watch the video and read the materials on our website here: https://livableraleigh.com/community-conversations-2/\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nThe City of Raleigh conducted a survey on some of these issues one year ago and you can see the results of that survey with over 1250 responses here: https://livableraleigh.com/survey-results-for-council…/
